How to Verify a Cosmetology License
Every state cosmetology board maintains a public license verification database. These tools let you confirm whether a cosmetologist, esthetician, or nail technician holds a current, active license in that state.
Salon Owners
Verify a new hire’s license before they begin work.
Clients
Confirm a service provider holds a valid, active license.
Cosmetologists
Check your own license status or expiration date.

What Information Do You Need for a License Lookup?
Most state license lookup tools allow you to search by one or more of the following:
- License Number — the most precise search method.
- First and Last Name — may return multiple results.
- Business or Salon Name — for establishment licenses.
- City or County — to narrow results geographically.
If a license does not appear in the search results, it may be expired, suspended, or the cosmetologist may hold a license under a different name. Contact the state board directly to resolve discrepancies.

A license lookup tells you current status — it won’t tell you whether a license is about to lapse or what it took to get there. If a search turns up nothing, the license may be expired because a renewal deadline was missed, or it may not exist yet if the holder is still waiting on reciprocity approval from another state. For the training hours and exam standards behind any active license, see the state requirements page; for the renewal cycle and CE hours that keep it active, see the renewal and continuing education guides.
