Washington Cosmetology License Lookup

Updated

Washington has no cosmetology board — the Department of Licensing runs the Cosmetology Program alongside about twenty other professions. Its lookup is one of the few that lets you search by UBI, the state business number, which is how you tie a salon to the company behind it.

What You Can Search By

Advanced Search fields

  • Name — for individual licensees.
  • License type — narrows within the Cosmetology profession.
  • County — useful for a common surname, since Washington offers no city field here.
  • UBI — the Unified Business Identifier. See below.

Searching by UBI

A UBI is the nine-digit number Washington assigns to a registered business, shared across the Department of Revenue, the Secretary of State and DOL. Being able to search licenses by it is close to unique — almost no other state exposes a business identifier in its license lookup.

It matters when a salon trades under a name that does not match its registration, or when one company operates several locations. Searching the UBI finds every DOL license tied to that business entity rather than to a trading name, which a name search cannot do.

Washington license types

  • Cosmetologist — the full license.
  • Hair Designer — hair only, narrower than cosmetology.
  • Esthetician and Master Esthetician — Washington runs a two-tier skin care license, and the master tier authorizes advanced treatments the standard one does not.
  • Manicurist — nails only.
  • Barber — its own license.
  • Instructor — authorizes teaching.

What the License Statuses Mean

Washington prints a status on the record, so you are not inferring anything from a date. Two things are worth reading closely.

The esthetics tier

Washington distinguishes Esthetician from Master Esthetician. The master license authorizes advanced skin treatments that a standard esthetician may not perform. If you are verifying someone for anything beyond basic facials, the tier is the question, not merely whether a license exists.

Hair Designer is not Cosmetologist

A Hair Designer license covers hair only. A Cosmetologist license is broader. Both are legitimate Washington licenses and they authorize different work, so match the license to the service.

If nothing comes back

  • Confirm the Profession is set to Cosmetology — leaving it unset searches everything DOL regulates.
  • Remember the 6am refresh. A license issued yesterday afternoon appears this morning, not immediately.
  • For a business, try the UBI rather than the trading name.

Verifying a Salon or Shop

Washington licenses several kinds of beauty establishment, and the distinctions are practical rather than bureaucratic:

  • Salon/Shop License — the standard fixed premises license.
  • Mobile Unit License — for services delivered from a vehicle or mobile setup. Washington licenses these explicitly rather than leaving them in a grey area.
  • Personal Service License — for a licensee providing services outside a licensed salon, such as in a client’s home or a care facility.

If a mobile or in-home operator does not appear under a salon license, that does not mean they are unlicensed — check the Mobile Unit and Personal Service categories, which is exactly what they exist for.

Using the UBI for establishments

This is where the UBI earns its keep. A salon group operating several locations holds one business registration and multiple licenses. A UBI search returns all of them; a name search returns whichever trading names happen to match.

Schools

Washington issues a School License (Cosmetology) and a separate Post-Secondary School License. Confirm which one a training provider holds before enrolling, because hours completed at a provider without the right current license will not count toward licensure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify a Washington cosmetology license? +

Use the DOL License lookup at professions.dol.wa.gov. Search by license number, or use Advanced Search for name, license type, county or UBI. Set the Profession to Cosmetology and clear the reCAPTCHA before searching.

What is a UBI number in the Washington license search? +

A Unified Business Identifier, the nine-digit number Washington assigns to a registered business and shares across the Department of Revenue, Secretary of State and DOL. Searching by UBI finds every DOL license tied to that business entity, which is useful when a salon trades under a different name or a company runs several locations.

How current is Washington license data? +

DOL states the data is updated every morning by 6am and may not show the most current information. A license issued or renewed during the day will not appear until the next morning, so a same-day check on a brand-new license can come back empty for timing reasons.

What is the difference between an Esthetician and Master Esthetician in Washington? +

Washington runs a two-tier skin care license. The Master Esthetician tier authorizes advanced treatments a standard Esthetician may not perform. If you are verifying someone for anything beyond basic facials, check the tier rather than just whether a license exists.

Is a Hair Designer the same as a Cosmetologist in Washington? +

No. A Hair Designer license covers hair only; a Cosmetologist license is broader. Both are legitimate Washington licenses authorizing different scopes of work, so match the license to the service being performed.

How do I check a mobile or in-home beauty service in Washington? +

Washington licenses these separately. A Mobile Unit License covers services from a vehicle or mobile setup, and a Personal Service License covers a licensee working outside a licensed salon, such as in a client's home. Someone not appearing under a salon license may hold one of these.
