Nevada licenses nail technicians as Nail Technologists through the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology. A nail technologist is defined in NRS 644A.115 as any person who, for compensation or by demonstration, engages in the practice of nail technology.
Note that ‘or by demonstration’ — Nevada's definition reaches unpaid demonstration work, not only paid services.
NRS 644A.345 sets four qualifications for examination:
- Be not less than 18 years of age. Nevada is one of the few states requiring adulthood; most set 16 or 17.
- Be of good moral character.
- Have successfully completed the 10th grade in school or its equivalent.
- Have completed one of three qualifying routes — 600 school hours, four years of out-of-state practice, or a 1,200-hour apprenticeship.
Three Routes, Not One
The third route is what makes Nevada unusual, and it is worth reading in full before assuming you need to enroll anywhere. See the training section below.
Training Requirements
Nevada offers three genuinely distinct paths to examination eligibility under NRS 644A.345(4). You need any one of them.
Route 1: School — 600 Hours
Practical training of at least 600 hours under the immediate supervision of a licensed instructor in a licensed school of cosmetology in which the practice is taught. This is the standard path.
Route 2: Four Years of Out-of-State Practice
Practice as a nail technologist for at least 4 years outside Nevada — expressly including another state, territory, or country — which has been documented and which the Board or its designee deems acceptable.
This is a significant provision for experienced technicians relocating to Nevada, and notably it does not require that you were licensed for those four years, only that you practised and can document it acceptably. It is also one of the few state provisions that explicitly contemplates experience gained in another country.
Route 3: Apprenticeship — 1,200 Hours
At least 1,200 hours of service as a nail technologist's apprentice in a licensed cosmetological establishment in which nail technology is practised — double the school route.
There is an important condition: the required hours must have been completed during the period of validity of your certificate of registration as a nail technologist's apprentice, issued under NRS 644A.355. Hours worked before you registered, or after the certificate lapses, do not count. Register first.
Coming From Another State
Separately from the four-year experience route, NRS 644A.460 sets requirements for granting a license to a person already licensed in another state, territory, or the District of Columbia. If you hold a current license elsewhere, start there rather than with the experience provision.
Nail Technician Exam Requirements
Nevada's examination scope is set out in NRS 644A.350, and it is more specific than most states publish.
The Practical Component
The examination may include practical demonstrations in nail technology, pedicuring, or the wrapping or extension of nails.
The Written and Oral Component
Nevada tests in writing and orally on three subjects:
- Antisepsis, sterilization and sanitation
- The use of mechanical apparatus and electricity in caring for the nails
- The laws of Nevada and regulations of the Board relating to cosmetology
The statute also allows such other demonstrations and tests as the Board requires, so the published list is a floor rather than a ceiling.
The middle subject is worth preparing for specifically. Nevada names electricity and mechanical apparatus as an examinable topic in its own right — drills, lamps, and equipment safety are not an afterthought here.
Examinations in Spanish
Under NRS 644A.480, examinations are provided in English and, upon request, in the Spanish language. The statute sets out a process for requesting a translated examination, a determination on the request, and a fee. If you want to test in Spanish, make the request as part of your application rather than assuming it at the test centre.
How to Renew Your Nevada Nail Technician License
Nevada nail technologist licenses renew every two years for $70. Renewals are filed through the Board at nvcosmo.com.
Continuing Education
Nevada requires 4 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle.
The Application Fee Is Low, the Renewal Is Not
Nevada charges just $15 to apply but $70 to renew — nearly five times as much. That inversion is unusual; most states charge more up front. Budget for the renewal rather than being surprised by it two years in.
Working in a Resort Hotel
Nevada has a licence category no other state needs in quite the same way. Under NRS 644A.455, the Board issues a limited license to practise cosmetology in a resort hotel or other designated location, with its own application, fee, issuance, expiration and renewal rules.
The statute also requires the holder to give notice of their intention to practise under the license, and confirms that the Board's regulatory and disciplinary authority applies. If your work takes you into hotel spas on the Strip, this is the provision to read.
Child Support Compliance
NRS 644A.485 requires applicants to submit certain information relating to payment of child support, and makes non-compliance a ground for denying a license or evidence of registration. It is a routine federal-law requirement, but it does mean an unrelated arrearage can hold up a licence.
What a Nail Technician Can Do in Nevada
Nevada defines nail technology precisely in NRS 644A.125. It means the practices of:
- Care of another's fingernails or toenails
- Beautification of another's nails
- Extension of another's nails
- Massaging of another's hands, forearms, feet or lower legs
The fourth item is more generous than most states' definitions. Nevada expressly includes the forearms and lower legs, not just the hands and feet — so the full arm-and-leg massage that accompanies a spa manicure or pedicure sits squarely inside the license.
The third item is equally clear: extension of the nails is named in the definition, so tips, sculptured nails, and enhancements need no additional credential.
Nevada's Other Credentials
The Board licenses an unusually granular set of professions, and a nail technologist license covers none of them:
- Esthetician and advanced esthetician — the latter authorized for nonablative esthetic medical procedures the Board approves by regulation
- Hair braider, shampoo technologist, and makeup artist — each with its own qualifications, and the makeup artist requiring a certificate of registration to practise in a licensed cosmetological establishment
- Electrologist — permanent hair removal
- Cosmetologist and hair designer
Nevada also defines microneedling separately, as the use of multiple solid small needles designed to pierce the skin to stimulate collagen production or cellular renewal. It is not within nail technology.
Teaching
NRS 644A.420 covers instructors of cosmetology, hair design, esthetics, advanced esthetics or nail technology, setting their qualifications for examination, fee, continuing education, and scope of license. There is also a student instructor license under NRS 644A.435 and a provisional license under NRS 644A.415.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours do you need for a nail tech license in Nevada? +
600 hours of practical training under the immediate supervision of a licensed instructor in a licensed school of cosmetology. Nevada also accepts two alternatives: at least four years of documented practice outside Nevada, or 1,200 hours as a registered nail technologist's apprentice.
How old do you have to be to become a nail tech in Nevada? +
At least 18. Nevada is one of the few states requiring applicants to be adults, where most set the minimum at 16 or 17. You must also have completed the 10th grade or its equivalent and be of good moral character.
Can I get a Nevada nail license with experience instead of school? +
Yes. NRS 644A.345 accepts practice as a nail technologist for at least four years outside Nevada, including in another state, territory, or country, provided it is documented and the Board or its designee deems it acceptable. It is one of the few state provisions that explicitly contemplates experience gained abroad.
How does the Nevada nail technologist apprenticeship work? +
1,200 hours of service in a licensed cosmetological establishment where nail technology is practised. The critical condition is that the hours must be completed during the period of validity of your certificate of registration as an apprentice under NRS 644A.355, so hours worked before registering do not count.
What does a Nevada nail technologist license cover? +
Care of fingernails or toenails, beautification of nails, extension of nails, and massaging of the hands, forearms, feet or lower legs. Nevada's inclusion of the forearms and lower legs is broader than most states, so a full spa manicure or pedicure massage is inside the license.
How much does a Nevada nail technologist license cost? +
$15 to apply, but $70 to renew every two years, nearly five times the application fee. That inversion is unusual, since most states charge more up front. Nevada also requires 4 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle.
Can I take the Nevada cosmetology exam in Spanish? +
Yes. NRS 644A.480 provides examinations in English and, upon request, in Spanish, with a defined process for requesting a translated examination, a determination on the request, and a fee. Make the request as part of your application rather than at the test centre.
What is on the Nevada nail technologist exam? +
Practical demonstrations in nail technology, pedicuring, or the wrapping or extension of nails, plus written and oral tests on antisepsis, sterilization and sanitation; the use of mechanical apparatus and electricity in caring for the nails; and Nevada law and Board regulations. The Board may add other demonstrations and tests.
