Idaho licenses nail technicians through the Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board, part of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) — the same agency that licenses everything from electricians to nurses in Idaho.
- Complete 400 hours of nail technology training, or an 800-hour apprenticeship.
- Pass the NIC examination, administered by Prov.
- Apply through Idaho's online services system.
The Apprenticeship Has a Minimum Duration
IDAPA 24.28.01 sets the apprenticeship period for Nail Technicians at twenty-five (25) weeks. That is the shortest of Idaho's apprenticeship terms, against 94 weeks for a barber-stylist, 104 weeks for a cosmetologist, and 38 weeks for estheticians and electrologists.
The hours alone do not satisfy the requirement — the apprenticeship must also run the full 25 weeks.
Fees Are Modest and Non-Refundable
Idaho's rule caps its fees at low figures: an Individual Original License or Certificate at $30, an Application at $30, and an annual renewal of $30. Endorsement is $45, Reinstatement $35, and Apprentice Registration $30.
Two things to note: all fees are non-refundable, and annual fees may be aggregated for biennial licensure — which is how Idaho's $30-a-year renewal becomes a $60 biennial payment.
Training Requirements
Idaho requires 400 hours of nail technology training, or an 800-hour apprenticeship — the apprenticeship being double, in line with the 2:1 student-to-apprentice ratio Idaho applies throughout its rules.
The apprenticeship must also run at least 25 weeks under IDAPA 24.28.01.
Out-of-State Experience Converts to Hours
Idaho publishes a conversion rate for a current licensee in another state, territory, possession or country who does not meet the qualifications for licensure through endorsement. For nail technicians:
Forty (40) hours as a student, or eighty (80) hours as an apprentice, for every six (6) months of practical experience in nail technology.
At that rate, five years of documented practical experience converts to 400 student hours — the full Idaho requirement. It is a slower conversion than some states offer, but it exists, and it applies precisely when endorsement is unavailable to you.
Upgrading to Cosmetology Is Expensive
Worth knowing before you choose a credential. IDAPA 24.28.01 states that a currently licensed esthetician or nail technician must complete one thousand four hundred (1,400) hours of cosmetology instruction, or two thousand eight hundred (2,800) hours as a cosmetology apprentice, to add a cosmetologist licence.
Compare the other upgrade paths Idaho publishes:
- A licensed barber-stylist needs only 300 hours of cosmetology instruction
- A licensed barber needs 700 hours
- A licensed nail technician or esthetician needs 1,400 hours
Idaho treats hair credentials as much closer to full cosmetology than nail or skin credentials. If you may eventually want a cosmetology licence, that difference is substantial.
Nail Technician Exam Requirements
Idaho uses the National Interstate Council (NIC) examination, administered by Prov, Inc.
Because Idaho relies on NIC, a score earned toward another NIC state's licence is generally the same test — which helps if you are moving between states that use it.
Endorsement First
If you hold a current licence elsewhere, check endorsement before the examination route. The endorsement licence fee is $45, and endorsement avoids both the training and the examination requirements.
The out-of-state hour credit — 40 student hours per six months of experience — applies specifically to licensees who do not meet the qualifications for endorsement. It is the fallback, not the primary route.
Apprentices Register With the Board
Idaho charges a $30 Apprentice Registration fee, so an apprenticeship is a registered status with the Board rather than a private arrangement with a salon. Register before you begin accruing hours.
Where to Apply
Applications and examinations both run through Idaho's online services system. The Board can be reached at OL-Licensing@dopl.idaho.gov or on (208) 334-3233.
How to Renew Your Idaho Nail Technician License
Idaho nail technician licences renew every two years for $60, through the state's online services system.
The structure behind that figure is worth understanding: IDAPA 24.28.01 sets an annual renewal fee of $30, and states that annual fees may be aggregated for biennial licensure. The $60 is two years of a $30 annual fee paid together.
No Continuing Education
Idaho does not require continuing education hours for nail technician renewal. The biennial fee is the whole cost of keeping the licence active.
All Fees Are Non-Refundable
Idaho states this at the head of its fee rule. Confirm you qualify before paying, because nothing comes back.
Reinstatement
Reinstating a lapsed licence costs $35 — modest by national standards, and less than the biennial renewal itself. Idaho does not escalate reinstatement into a punitive fee the way several states do.
The Full Fee Schedule
- Individual Original License or Certificate — $30, annual renewal $30
- Application — $30
- Endorsement License — $45
- Reinstatement — $35
- Apprentice Registration — $30
- Instructor License — $35, annual renewal $35
- Establishment, Dealer, Facility License/Registration — $25, annual renewal $25
- School License — $360, annual renewal $100
These are the amounts the rule sets as not to exceed caps, so check the Board's current published figures before paying.
What a Nail Technician Can Do in Idaho
Idaho's Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board licenses nail technicians alongside barbers, barber-stylists, cosmetologists, estheticians, electrologists, haircutters, makeup artists, and instructors in each discipline.
A nail technician licence covers nail technology alone. The scale of Idaho's upgrade requirement — 1,400 hours to move from nail technician to cosmetologist — underlines how separately the state treats the credentials.
Where You Work
Idaho licenses establishments, and the rules distinguish between a primary and a contiguous establishment. If you are setting up a nail space adjoining another licensed business, that distinction determines how it is licensed.
Establishment licences cost $25 initially with a $25 annual renewal — among the lowest establishment fees in the country.
Schools and Instructors
Schools are licensed at $360 initially with a $100 annual renewal, and instructors at $35. Before beginning instruction, an instructor must submit and obtain Board approval of a curriculum complying with Section 54-5815(1)(g) of the Idaho Code.
Attendance Rules
Idaho's rules include provisions on how instruction hours are counted, including a cap tying absences to a percentage of required instruction hours, and allowing a student up to thirty (30) hours of credit toward required instruction in defined circumstances. If your program is close to the line on hours, those provisions are worth reading with your school.
Where the Law Sits
Idaho regulates the profession under Title 54, chapter 58 of the Idaho Code, with rules at IDAPA 24.28.01. DOPL publishes both, and the rules carry effective dates — several provisions are marked 7-1-24 or 7-1-26 — so check which version applies to your situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours do you need for a nail tech license in Idaho? +
400 hours of nail technology training, or an 800-hour apprenticeship. IDAPA 24.28.01 also sets a minimum apprenticeship duration of 25 weeks for nail technicians, so the hours alone do not satisfy the requirement.
How much does an Idaho nail technician license cost? +
Idaho's rule sets an application fee of $30 and an individual original license fee of $30, with a $30 annual renewal. Annual fees may be aggregated for biennial licensure, which is how the renewal becomes $60 for two years. All fees are non-refundable.
Can out-of-state experience count toward an Idaho nail license? +
Yes, if you hold a current license elsewhere but do not qualify for endorsement. Idaho credits 40 hours as a student or 80 hours as an apprentice for every six months of practical experience in nail technology. At that rate five years of experience converts to the full 400 hours.
How long is the Idaho nail technician apprenticeship? +
800 hours over a minimum of 25 weeks. That is the shortest apprenticeship term Idaho sets, against 38 weeks for estheticians and electrologists, 94 weeks for barber-stylists, and 104 weeks for cosmetologists. Apprentices must also register with the Board for a $30 fee.
How do I upgrade an Idaho nail license to cosmetology? +
It is a substantial step. A currently licensed nail technician or esthetician must complete 1,400 hours of cosmetology instruction, or 2,800 hours as a cosmetology apprentice. By contrast a licensed barber-stylist needs only 300 hours and a barber 700.
Do Idaho nail technicians need continuing education? +
No. Idaho requires no continuing education hours for nail technician renewal. The biennial fee is the whole cost of keeping the license active.
What does it cost to reinstate a lapsed Idaho nail license? +
$35, which is less than the biennial renewal itself. Idaho does not escalate reinstatement into a punitive fee the way several states do, though all fees remain non-refundable.
What exam do Idaho nail technicians take? +
The National Interstate Council (NIC) examination, administered by Prov, Inc. Because Idaho uses NIC, a score earned toward another NIC state's license is generally the same test, which helps when moving between states that use it.
