Iowa Esthetician License Requirements

Iowa licenses estheticians through the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Arts & Sciences, part of the Department of Inspections, Appeals, & Licensing (DIAL). You must complete school training and pass the NIC theory exam — Iowa does not recognize an apprenticeship path for estheticians.

1. Complete 600 hours of training. Finish an esthetics program at a board-licensed cosmetology school, or a program that meets the requirements of Iowa Administrative Code 481—941.14.
2. Pass the licensing exam. Score 75% or higher on the NIC or national theory esthetician exam, administered through ProV.
3. Have your school send documentation directly to the Board. Your official transcript or diploma must come straight from your school to the Board office — documents submitted by the applicant are not accepted.
4. Apply and pay the fee. Submit your application through the Professional Licensure Portal along with the $60 non-refundable application fee.
5. Receive your license. Once your education and exam results are verified, your Iowa esthetician license is issued.

Iowa requires 600 hours of esthetics training at a board-licensed cosmetology school under Iowa Code chapter 157 and Iowa Administrative Code 481—941.14. Documentation must be one of the following, sent directly to the Board office:

• An official transcript or diploma from a board-licensed cosmetology school verifying completion of 600 hours of education; or
• An official transcript or diploma from an educational program showing completion of a course of study that meets the requirements of Iowa Administrative Code 481—941.14, for Board review before licensure.

Iowa does not offer an apprenticeship pathway to an esthetician license — all required hours must come from a school program. Curriculum typically covers facial treatments, skin analysis, hair removal methods, makeup application, anatomy and physiology, sanitation and infection control, and Iowa laws and rules.

Iowa requires a passing score of 75% or higher on the NIC (National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology) or national theory esthetician exam.

Registration

Out-of-State Testing

If you took the exam in another state, the exam administrator must send verification of your results directly to the Iowa board office — results submitted by the applicant are not accepted.

Iowa esthetician licenses are on a 2-year (biennial) renewal cycle. Renew online through the Professional Licensure Portal within the 60 days before your expiration date. The renewal fee is $60. If you miss the deadline, you have a 30-day grace period with a $60 late fee; after that, your license becomes inactive and you cannot practice in Iowa.

Continuing Education

Your first renewal after initial licensure is exempt from continuing education. After that, license holders with one active barbering/cosmetology arts & sciences license need 6 hours of CE per renewal cycle: at least 4 hours specific to esthetics, and at least 2 hours in Iowa barbering & cosmetology laws, rules, and infection control. Licensees holding two or three active licenses in the field need 10 or 14 hours respectively, with proportionally more discipline-specific hours. Licensees who live and practice exclusively in another state can meet Iowa's CE requirement by satisfying that state's CE rules instead (or are exempt if that state has no CE requirement), but must still pay all renewal fees on time.

Iowa defines the esthetics scope of practice in Iowa Code § 157.1. A licensed Iowa esthetician may:

• Skin treatments: Beautify, massage, cleanse, stimulate, or hydrate the skin (except the scalp) using cosmetic preparations — cleansers, antiseptics, tonics, lotions, creams, exfoliants, masques, and essential oils — applied by hand or with any device designed for nonmedical skin care
• Makeup and lash/brow services: Apply makeup or eyelashes, tint eyelashes or eyebrows, or lighten hair on the body (except the scalp)
• Hair removal: Remove superfluous body hair using depilatories, waxing, sugaring, tweezers, or certified laser or intense pulsed light devices (this excludes threading and electrology, which uses an electric needle)
• Permanent makeup: Apply permanent makeup or cosmetic micropigmentation

Advanced services — including certain laser/IPL hair removal, permanent makeup, extractions, and chemical peels — require additional Board-specified training and certification beyond the base esthetician license under Iowa Code § 157.3A.
