Wyoming Esthetician License Requirements

Wyoming licenses estheticians through the Wyoming Board of Cosmetology. You must complete 600 hours of training at a Board-recognized school and pass both parts of the national NIC exam before you can apply for your license.

1. Graduate from a recognized esthetics program. Complete at least 600 hours of training over a minimum of three months at a cosmetology school recognized by the state, or hold an out-of-state license and provide certification of that license.
2. Submit your Application for Examination to the Board office with a notarized signature, proof of lawful presence, a current photo, certification of your training hours, and the $48 license fee (money order or cashier’s check only).
3. Register for your exams with Prov, Inc. Once the Board approves your application, Prov will email you instructions to schedule and pay for your written and written-practical exams at provexam.com/register.
4. Pass both the written and written-practical NIC exams.
5. Wait for your license. Once you pass both exams, the Board office issues your license. You must have it in hand before you start working.

Wyoming requires 600 hours of theory and practical instruction for a standalone esthetician license, over a minimum of three months, under Board of Cosmetology Rules, Chapter 6, Section 4. The curriculum must cover:

• Health, safety, and infection control
• Anatomy, physiology, and histology of the skin
• Skin analysis, disorders, and diseases
• Skin care products (chemistry, ingredients, and selection)
• Basics of chemistry and electricity
• State laws and regulations, and professional development
• Pre- and post-service procedures and treatment room protocol
• Facial massage, advanced topics and treatments, and makeup

If you instead train through Wyoming’s full 1,600-hour cosmetology program, 450 of those hours must cover the same esthetics curriculum — but a standalone esthetician license requires the full 600-hour program. Correspondence courses are not recognized, and apprenticeship training only counts if it is a certified program through a state regulatory agency.

Wyoming requires both a written (theory) exam and a written-practical exam, both developed by the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) and administered by computer through Prov, Inc.

Registration

You must first register with the Wyoming Board of Cosmetology office. Once your application is approved, Prov emails you scheduling instructions. Register and schedule at provexam.com/register, or call or text (801) 733-4455.

Fees and Retakes

Each exam — written and written-practical — costs $88, paid directly to Prov at the time of scheduling. The fee is the same whether you’re testing for the first time or retaking a section. If you fail a phase, you must retake it; if you don’t pass every phase within one year of your first failure, you must retake the entire exam.

Results

Official results are emailed within one business day of your exam.

Wyoming personal licenses, including the esthetician license, renew every two years. The renewal fee is $96 (calculated at $48 per year), under Board of Cosmetology Rules, Chapter 13. If this is your first renewal since initial licensure, contact the Board office directly, since your renewal may be prorated to the standard two-year cycle.

Continuing Education

Wyoming does not require continuing education to renew an esthetician license. The Board’s administrative rules do not include a continuing education chapter for any personal license category.

How to Renew

Renew online at cosmetology.wyo.gov, or mail the Personal License Renewal Form with a check or money order to 2515 Warren Avenue, Suite 302, Cheyenne, WY 82002. The Board does not accept cash. You’ll need a current passport-type photo on file and must disclose any disciplinary action, license surrender, or felony conviction since your last renewal.

Wyoming defines the esthetician scope of practice in Board of Cosmetology Rules, Chapter 1, Section 6(c), under authority of the Wyoming Cosmetology Act (W.S. § 33-12-119 through 33-12-140). A licensed Wyoming esthetician may:

• Skin treatments: Massage, cleanse, exfoliate, stimulate, manipulate, and beautify the skin, or apply makeup, oils, lotions, or other preparations to the skin, using hands, chemicals, or mechanical or electrical apparatuses
• Hair removal: Remove superfluous hair by means other than electrolysis and laser
• Brows and lashes: Arch or tint eyebrows, and tint, chemically wave, or apply extensions to eyelashes
• Extractions: Perform facial extractions using hands or mechanical or electrical apparatuses

Wyoming law explicitly prohibits any procedure that pierces the epidermal or dermal layer of the skin, and licensees may not use the title “Medical Esthetician.” Facial makeup application alone, without other esthetics services, is exempt from licensure under W.S. § 33-12-140(c).
