How to Get a Barber License in Washington

Washington licenses barbers through the Department of Licensing, within a single cosmetology programme covering seven credentials. Anyone who provides cosmetology, barber, manicure, esthetician, master esthetician, or hair design services for a fee needs a licence.

The Vendor Changed on 1 May 2026

Worth knowing before you look up examination information: Washington's cosmetology testing vendor changed to Prov as of 1 May 2026. Older material naming a different vendor is out of date.

The Requirements

  • Be at least 17 years old;
  • Meet one of two education options; and
  • Pass the state-approved practical and written exams.

Two Education Options

Option 1 — graduate from an approved, licensed school. Minimum required school hours:

  • Barber: 1,000 hours
  • Cosmetologist: 1,600 hours
  • Hair Designer: 1,400 hours
  • Combined Master Esthetician: 1,200 hours
  • Esthetician: 750 hours
  • Manicurist: 600 hours
  • Master Esthetician: 450 hours

Option 2 — complete an approved apprenticeship programme. Minimum required apprenticeship hours:

  • Barber: 2,000 hours
  • Cosmetologist: 3,000 hours
  • Manicurist, Esthetician, Master Esthetician and Hair Designer: 2,000 hours each

Barbering Is 600 Hours Shorter Than Cosmetology

At 1,000 hours against cosmetology's 1,600, Washington draws one of the wider gaps between the two trades. Barbering is also 400 hours shorter than the hair designer credential, which is worth comparing if hair is your focus.

Your School May Ask for More

DOL flags this for both routes: your school may require you to complete more than the minimum state-required hours, and the same applies to apprenticeship programmes. The state figure is a floor.

Training Requirements

Washington requires 1,000 school hours or 2,000 apprenticeship hours for a barber licence — a clean 2:1 ratio.

You Can Test in the Final 100 Hours

Washington's most useful provision, and it applies to both routes: you will be eligible to take your exams when you are within 100 hours of completing the required hours of instruction.

So a barbering student can sit both examinations from 900 hours, and an apprentice from 1,900. DOL adds the sensible caveat: please work with your school to ensure you are prepared to take your exams.

But Finishing Still Comes First

The permission is to test early, not to be licensed early. DOL states it twice, once for each route: you must complete all required hours of course instruction and pass both exams before you can apply for your license.

Compare Texas, which releases only the written exam at 900 of 1,000 hours, and Florida, where testing at 600 of 900 hours carries a real penalty for failure. Washington lets you sit both papers inside the last 100 hours with no penalty attached.

The Apprenticeship Route

Washington's apprenticeship programmes are approved rather than informal, and at 2,000 hours for barbering the ratio to school hours is the common national one. As with schools, your programme may require you to complete more than the minimum.

Where the Hours Sit Nationally

Washington's 1,000 hours places it alongside California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri and Texas, and comfortably below Ohio, Michigan and Nebraska at 1,800.

Barber Exam Requirements

You must pass the state-approved practical and written exams, administered by Prov, Washington's cosmetology testing vendor since 1 May 2026.

One Attempt per Exam per Day

DOL sets out the retake rule plainly: you may take each exam once per day. If you fail an exam, you may apply to retake it on another day. You will need to schedule a re-exam and pay the re-exam fee.

Note the framing — each exam once per day. You can sit the written and the practical on the same day, but you cannot resit a failed paper the same day.

Testing Early Is Allowed

You become eligible when you are within 100 hours of completing the required hours of instruction, on either the school or the apprenticeship route. For barbering that means 900 school hours or 1,900 apprenticeship hours.

One Application Form Covers Everything

Washington uses a single form for the whole programme: the Cosmetologist, Hair Designer, Barber, Manicurist, Esthetician, or Master Esthetician License, Renewal, Reinstatement, or Reciprocity Application.

That one document handles initial licensure, renewal, reinstatement and reciprocity, so you will use the same form whichever route you are on.

Apply Online for Speed

DOL is direct: you'll receive your license faster by applying and paying online. The cosmetology licensing fee is payable when you submit the application.

How to Renew Your Washington Barber License

Washington administers barber licences through the Department of Licensing, using the same combined application form for initial licensure, renewal, reinstatement and reciprocity.

Fees

DOL publishes a dedicated Fees: Cosmetologists page covering the whole programme. We have left the amounts unstated here rather than repeat figures from an unofficial source — check that page, and note that the licensing fee is payable at the point you submit your application.

No Continuing Education

DOL's published licensing requirements for the cosmetology programme set out no continuing education obligation for barbers.

Apply and Pay Online

The Department states that applying and paying online gets your licence to you faster than the alternatives, and it offers other submission methods for those who prefer them.

The Vendor Change Affects Existing Candidates Too

If you were part-way through the examination process before 1 May 2026, the change of vendor to Prov is worth checking on. DOL directs candidates to its Frequently asked questions: Cosmetologists page for details of the transition.

Seven Credentials, One Programme

Because barbering sits inside a combined programme with cosmetology, hair design, manicuring, esthetics and master esthetics, much of DOL's guidance addresses all seven together. Check that any hour figure or requirement you are reading is the barber line rather than one of the others.

What a Barber Can Do in Washington

Washington requires a licence of anyone who provides cosmetology, barber, manicure, esthetician, master esthetician, or hair design services for a fee. The trigger is the fee — and the Department groups all seven credentials in one programme.

The Seven Credentials, by Length

  • Cosmetologist — 1,600 school hours
  • Hair Designer — 1,400
  • Combined Master Esthetician — 1,200
  • Barber — 1,000
  • Esthetician — 750
  • Manicurist — 600
  • Master Esthetician — 450

Hair Designer Sits Between Barber and Cosmetologist

Washington's hair designer credential at 1,400 hours is worth understanding before choosing. It is 400 hours longer than barbering and 200 shorter than full cosmetology. If your intended practice is hair rather than shaving and beard work, comparing the two curricula is a real decision rather than a formality.

Apprenticeship Is Available Across the Board

Unusually, Washington offers an approved apprenticeship route for every credential in the programme, not just barbering. Most sit at 2,000 hours, with cosmetology at 3,000.

Master Esthetics Has Two Routes

Note the two esthetics figures: Master Esthetician at 450 hours is the upgrade for someone already holding the 750-hour esthetician credential, while Combined Master Esthetician at 1,200 hours is the single programme covering both. The two add up exactly, as Virginia's dual barbering programme does.

Where to Confirm

DOL publishes the programme's requirements, fees and frequently asked questions on separate pages under dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/cosmetology, and the examination vendor has been Prov since 1 May 2026.

Who administers the Washington barber exam? +
