South Carolina Nail Technician License Requirements

South Carolina licenses nail technicians through the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology, part of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR).

1. Complete 300 hours of nail technology training.
2. Pass the examination, administered by Prov.
3. Apply to the Board and pay the $45 examination licence fee.

Two Fees, Two Payees

Worth separating out, because applicants regularly conflate them. The $45 is the Board's fee. The examination itself is charged by Prov, and the Board explicitly directs applicants requiring examination to contact Prov for examination costs. Budget both.

Already Licensed Elsewhere

South Carolina charges $60 for endorsement against $45 for the examination route. The higher fee reflects the verification work, and it is still the faster path if you hold a current out-of-state licence.

South Carolina requires 300 hours of training for the nail technician licence — the same figure Utah, New Jersey and Wisconsin set, and toward the lower end of the national range.

The Board issues its three practitioner credentials on an identical fee schedule, which makes the training requirement the main practical difference between them:

• Nail Technician — $45 examination, $60 endorsement, $52 renewal, $152 reinstatement
• Registered Cosmetologist — the same four figures
• Esthetician — the same four figures

Instructors sit on a different schedule: $45 examination, $80 endorsement, $82 renewal, $182 reinstatement.

If You Plan to Rent a Booth or Open a Salon

South Carolina licenses booth renters on the same fee schedule as salons — $100 initial, $72 renewal, $122 reinstatement — and both carry a condition worth planning around: initial applications and reinstatement applications require an inspection.

That inspection is on LLR's schedule, not yours. If you intend to rent a booth rather than work as a salon employee, factor the inspection into your timeline before committing to a start date.

South Carolina contracts its cosmetology examinations to Prov. The Board maintains its own examinations page covering the process, and directs candidates to Prov for the costs.

What You Pay, and to Whom

• $45 to the Board, as the examination licence fee
• Prov's examination fee, charged separately — the Board does not publish it and tells applicants to contact Prov directly

The practical consequence is that the Board's published $45 is not your total cost of getting licensed by examination.

The Endorsement Alternative

If you hold a current nail technician licence in another state, endorsement at $60 avoids the examination entirely. Compare the $60 with the $45 board fee plus Prov's charge, and endorsement is usually the cheaper as well as the faster route.

Verification and Records

The Board charges $5.00 for each licence verification, which is the document another state's board will ask for when you move. A duplicate licence is $10.00, limited to one.

South Carolina nail technician licenses renew every two years for $52, filed through LLR's online renewal service.

Continuing Education

South Carolina requires 4 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle. The Board maintains a dedicated continuing education page setting out approved providers and requirements.

Inactive Status Is Free

This is the most useful thing in South Carolina's fee schedule, and it is easy to miss: Inactive Status costs $0.00.

If you are stepping away from the trade — a career break, a move, a period out of practice — you can move your licence to inactive at no cost rather than letting it lapse. Coming back later costs a $100.00 Reactivation Fee.

Compare the alternative. Letting a licence lapse means reinstatement at $152, and reinstatement applications require an inspection. Going inactive and reactivating costs $100 with no inspection attached to the individual licence.

The Reinstatement Number Is High

At $152, South Carolina reinstatement costs nearly three times a renewal. Between that, the free inactive option, and the reactivation fee, the cheapest thing you can do with a licence you are not currently using is park it deliberately rather than let it expire.

South Carolina defines its cosmetology credentials in Section 40-13-20 of the Code of Laws, and licenses nail technicians as one of three practitioner credentials alongside the registered cosmetologist and the esthetician.

The booth renter licence is the one that catches independent technicians out. Renting a chair in someone else's salon is its own licensable arrangement in South Carolina, not something covered by your personal licence — and like a salon, initial and reinstatement applications require an inspection.
