Oklahoma Esthetician License Requirements

Oklahoma licenses estheticians — called "Facial Operators" under state rule — through the State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. You must complete 600 hours of training, pass the Board's written and practical exam, and apply for your license.

1. Meet the basic eligibility rules. You must be at least 16 years old and have completed at least the 8th grade.
2. Complete 600 hours of esthetics training (or the equivalent 30 credit hours) at a Board-approved school, covering skin care, make-up, and hair removal other than electrolysis.
3. Register for your exam. Within 10 days of finishing your course, you and your school submit an exam registration and $35 registration fee. You'll receive a work permit and notice to appear for your exam.
4. Pass the written and practical exam. The $50 exam fee covers both portions, administered at the Board's Testing Center in Oklahoma City. You need a minimum score of 75% on each.
5. Apply for your license. Pay the $40 initial license fee to receive your Facial Operator/Esthetics license. If more than a year passes between passing your exam and applying, you'll need to retest.

Oklahoma requires 600 clock hours (or the equivalent 30 credit hours) of Facial Operator/Esthetician training at a school approved by the State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Training covers skin care, make-up application, and hair removal services (waxing, tweezing, depilatories), but hair removal does not include electrolysis.

If you completed your training hours in another state, you can transfer them to Oklahoma by obtaining a certification/affidavit of hours from that state's board, along with a $30 fee, for the Board's review. Oklahoma also allows an apprenticeship path for applicants who submit a letter of hardship explaining why attending school is not feasible; apprentices must train under a currently licensed Facial Instructor.

Oklahoma administers its own esthetics exam — both a written and a practical portion — at the Board's Testing Center in Oklahoma City, rather than relying primarily on a national testing vendor.

Registration

After completing your 600-hour course, you and your school must submit an exam registration form and $35 registration fee (cashier's check or money order) within 10 days of course completion. The exam fee is $50, and you must score at least 75% on both the written and practical portions.

Work Permits and Retakes

You are eligible for a work permit once your exam registration and fee are received. You are allowed two work permits total; a third failure or no-show (without an excused emergency) means no further work permits, and you cannot work until you pass and apply for your license. If you fail the written portion, you may retake it as a computer-based test through PSI at a Tulsa-area facility, but you must first submit a $35 re-registration fee to the Board and notify them you'll be testing with PSI.

You have one year from passing your exam to apply for your license, or one year from course completion to register for the exam, before you must complete additional review hours to remain eligible.

An Oklahoma esthetics (Facial Operator) license is valid for one year, expiring on the last day of your birth month, though a two-year renewal option is also available. The renewal fee is $40 per year ($80 for the two-year option). A late penalty of $10 applies if your license has been expired more than two months.

Continuing Education

Oklahoma does not require continuing education hours to renew an esthetics/Facial Operator license.

How to Renew

Renewal forms are mailed with your license. If you lose your renewal form, submit a note with your name, address, phone number, and date of birth along with your fee (plus a $5 lost-form fee) by money order or cashier's check. If your license has lapsed for a year or more, you may still be eligible to renew with back fees and penalties for up to five years; after five years, you must complete review hours and retest before you can re-apply.

Oklahoma defines the esthetics scope of practice under Okla. Admin. Code § 175:1-1-2. An "Esthetician/Facialist/Facial Operator" is a person licensed by the Board to perform, for compensation:

• Skin care: Facials and skin treatments using cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions, or creams
• Make-up application: Applying make-up or beautifying the face or neck
• Eyelash application: Applying eyelashes
• Hair removal: Removing facial hair by tweezing, depilatories, or waxing — electrolysis is explicitly excluded from the esthetician scope

These services must be performed to the public in a place licensed by the Board. Oklahoma also offers a separate, more limited Eyelash Extension Specialist license for individuals who only perform eyelash extension services and are not licensed as a Cosmetologist or Esthetician.
