How to Get a Nail Technician License in Mississippi

Mississippi licenses nail technicians through the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering (MSBCB). The Board runs its own examination rather than contracting to a national vendor.

The route begins with the Application to Test for Practitioner License, which must be completed and accompanied by four attachments before you may sit the written or theory exam:

  1. Two current forms of identification, at least one of which must be a government-issued identification with a photograph
  2. Proof of successful completion of 10th grade
  3. A certified transcript demonstrating successful completion — meaning a passing grade of 70 at minimum and the minimum hours required under Rule 5.2 for the licence you want
  4. A non-refundable $25.00 application fee, payable by check or money order

The completed application goes to MSBCB, PO Box 55689, Jackson, MS 39296-5689.

Two Routes to the Hours

Mississippi accepts either 350 hours in a licensed school or 700 hours in an approved apprenticeship — the apprenticeship route being double, as in most states that offer both.

You Name Your Salon on the Application

The form asks for the name and mailing address of the salon or shop where you will work after licensure. It is worth having that settled before you apply.

Training Requirements

Mississippi requires 350 hours in a licensed school, or 700 hours in an approved apprenticeship, for the nail technician licence.

The transcript you submit must do two things at once: show the minimum hours required under Rule 5.2 for a nail technician, and show successful completion, meaning a passing grade of 70 at minimum. A transcript recording attendance without a qualifying grade will not satisfy the Board.

The 10th Grade Requirement — and Who Is Exempt

Applicants must supply proof of successful completion of 10th grade. Two groups do not:

  • Anyone who has previously held a Mississippi cosmetology, barber, nail technician or esthetician licence. Attach a colour copy of each Mississippi licence instead, and you are excused both the 10th grade proof and the transcript.
  • Cosmetology and barber applicants who completed a cross-over curriculum, who attach a colour copy of their Mississippi practitioner licence in place of the 10th grade proof.

Student Permits

The Board issues a Student Permit during training, applied for on its own form. If you are enrolling, that is the first document rather than the Application to Test.

Coming From Another State or the Military

MSBCB publishes distinct forms for these situations rather than folding them into the standard application:

  • Application to Test for Practitioner Reciprocity — for licensees from other states
  • Universal Application
  • Military Application

Nail Technician Exam Requirements

Mississippi administers its own written/theory examination. You cannot sit it until the Application to Test, with all four attachments, has been filed and accepted.

The Exam Is Offered in Three Languages

The application form asks you to select your Exam Language: English, Spanish, or Vietnamese. It is a checkbox on the form rather than a separate accommodation request, which makes Mississippi one of the more straightforward states in which to test in a language other than English.

The Board also publishes a list of Translation Providers for applicants who need documents translated.

The Transcript Must Show a Grade, Not Just Hours

The single most common obstacle is the transcript. Mississippi requires a certified transcript demonstrating successful completion, which the form defines as a passing grade of 70 at minimum alongside the Rule 5.2 hours. Ask your school for a certified transcript showing both before you submit.

If You Have a Felony Conviction

Mississippi has a defined, published route rather than a discretionary one. The application asks whether you have ever been convicted of a felony, and if so directs you to complete a Fresh Start Act Consideration Request.

The Fresh Start Act is Mississippi's occupational licensing reform aimed at people with criminal records, and having a dedicated form for it means the question is handled as a process with its own paperwork rather than as an obstacle at the Board's discretion.

How to Renew Your Mississippi Nail Technician License

Mississippi nail technician licenses renew every two years for $50. Renewals can be filed online through the state's licensure portal, or on the Board's Practitioner Renewal form.

Continuing Education

The Board publishes a Continuing Education Policy, updated most recently as version 4.2026. Check the current version of that policy before renewing rather than relying on older guidance, since the Board revises it periodically.

Renewing Online

MSBCB directs practitioners to the Practitioner Online Renewal service at ms.gov for the fastest route. The paper Practitioner Renewal Form remains available for those who prefer it or cannot use the online service.

Other Board Transactions

The Board publishes separate forms for the transactions that come up around a licence:

  • Duplicate License Request — for a lost or damaged licence
  • Demonstrator Permit Application — for demonstrating products or techniques
  • Establishment Application and Re-Inspection Application — for salons

Most of these forms carry a version stamp such as V4.2026 or V7.2026. Download the current version from the Board rather than reusing a saved copy, because superseded forms are routinely rejected.

What a Nail Technician Can Do in Mississippi

Mississippi licenses Nail Technicians as one of four practitioner credentials issued by the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering:

  • Cosmetologist
  • Barber
  • Nail Technician
  • Esthetician

Those four appear as the licence type options on the Application to Test, and a nail technician licence covers only nail services. Instructors are licensed separately again, with their own application and reciprocity forms.

Where the Hours Requirements Live

Rule 5.2 of the Board's rules sets the minimum hours for each licence type, and it is the reference the Application to Test points to. If you need to confirm the exact requirement for a credential, that is the rule to check rather than a secondary summary.

Establishments

Salons and shops hold their own licence, applied for on the Establishment Application, and the Board runs a Re-Inspection Application process for premises that need re-inspecting. Because the practitioner application asks you to name the salon where you will work, the Board links practitioners to licensed premises from the outset.

Schools

Schools are licensed by the Board and carry obligations of their own, including a School Surety Bond, Certification of Instructor Employment, monthly reporting, and a Post Secondary Affidavit. If you are choosing where to train, a school in good standing with those filings is the practical thing to confirm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours do you need for a nail tech license in Mississippi? +

350 hours in a licensed school, or 700 hours in an approved apprenticeship. Your certified transcript must show both the minimum hours required under Rule 5.2 and successful completion, which the Board defines as a passing grade of 70 at minimum.

Can I take the Mississippi cosmetology exam in Vietnamese or Spanish? +

Yes. The Application to Test asks you to select your exam language from English, Spanish, or Vietnamese. It is a checkbox on the form rather than a separate accommodation request, which makes Mississippi one of the more straightforward states in which to test in another language.

What do I need to submit to sit the Mississippi nail technician exam? +

Four attachments with the Application to Test: two current forms of identification with at least one government-issued photo ID, proof of 10th grade completion, a certified transcript showing a passing grade of at least 70 and the Rule 5.2 hours, and a non-refundable $25 application fee by check or money order.

Can I get a Mississippi nail license with a felony conviction? +

There is a defined route. The application asks whether you have ever been convicted of a felony, and if so directs you to complete a Fresh Start Act Consideration Request. Mississippi handles the question as a published process with its own form rather than as an obstacle left to discretion.

Do I need proof of 10th grade if I held a Mississippi license before? +

No. If you have previously held a Mississippi cosmetology, barber, nail technician or esthetician license, you attach a colour copy of each license instead, and you are excused both the 10th grade proof and the program transcript.

How much does a Mississippi nail technician license cost? +

$25 non-refundable to apply to test, and $50 for the license, renewed every two years for $50. Renewals can be filed online through the state licensure portal or on the Board's paper Practitioner Renewal Form.

Where do I find Mississippi nail technician hour requirements? +

Rule 5.2 of the Board's rules sets the minimum hours for each license type, and it is the reference the Application to Test points to. Check that rule directly rather than relying on a secondary summary if you need to confirm an exact figure.

Do I have to name my salon on the Mississippi application? +

Yes. The Application to Test asks for the name and mailing address of the salon or shop where you will work after licensure, so it is worth having that settled before you apply. The Board links practitioners to licensed premises from the outset.
