Maine does not license a "barber". It licenses a Barber Hair Stylist, and that name is what you will need when you go looking for the right application form.
The regulator is the Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Program within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, part of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation.
Maine Licenses Five Practices, Including "Limited Barbering"
The Program states its remit as regulating aesthetics, barbering, limited barbering, cosmetology, and nail technology. That second barbering tier is worth knowing about before you enrol — Maine is one of relatively few states to license a narrower barbering credential alongside the full one.
The individual licence types are:
- Barber Hair Stylist
- Hair Designer
- Cosmetology
- Aesthetician
- Nail Technology
- Trainee — available for each of the above
The Trainee Licence Comes First
Maine issues a Trainee licence while you learn, and the terms differ by discipline:
- Trainee Barber and Cosmetologist — renewable, expires 18 months from the licence issue date
- Trainee Aesthetician — expires 12 months
- Trainee Nail Technician — expires 6 months
The trainee renewal fee is $10. The 18-month term for barbering trainees is the longest of the three, which tells you something about how long Maine expects the training to take.
Training Hours
Maine sets the hour requirement for the Barber Hair Stylist course in Program rule rather than publishing it on its licensing pages. We have deliberately left the figure unstated here rather than repeat one from an unofficial source — confirm the current requirement on the Program's Laws & Rules page or with the Program directly before enrolling.
Examinations Run Through Prov
Maine outsources examination administration entirely. Its Examinations page carries no dates or content at all, stating that all pertinent information regarding the examinations including exam dates and registration deadlines can be obtained by contacting the testing company, Prov, Inc., of Sandy, Utah.
Training Requirements
Maine's Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Program licenses schools as well as practitioners, and regulates aesthetics, barbering, limited barbering, cosmetology and nail technology programmes.
Barbering and Limited Barbering
Maine distinguishes barbering from limited barbering in its own statement of responsibilities. If the full Barber Hair Stylist course is longer than you need, ask the Program about the limited credential before committing — it exists precisely for practitioners whose intended scope is narrower.
The Trainee Route
A Trainee Barber and Cosmetologist licence lasts 18 months from the date of issue and is renewable at $10. That is the working window Maine gives you to complete training and qualify, and it is materially longer than the 12 months allowed to trainee aestheticians or the 6 months allowed to trainee nail technicians.
Apprentices and Pay
The Program is explicit that it does not handle apprentice wages. Asked how an apprentice gets paid, it answers: contact the Department of Labor and ask for Wage Structure. Licensing and employment law are separate matters in Maine, and the Program will not advise on the second.
Where the Rules Live
The Program publishes a Laws & Rules page covering the statute at 32 M.R.S. chapter 14 and the Program's own rules. The FAQ cites Title 32, section 14203(2) directly on the question of working outside a shop, so that is the chapter to read.
Barber Exam Requirements
Maine hands examination administration to Prov, Inc. and points candidates there for everything.
The Program Publishes No Exam Details
Maine's Examinations page is unusually spare. Rather than listing dates, formats or content, it states that all pertinent information regarding the examinations including exam dates and registration deadlines can be obtained by contacting the testing company, and gives Prov's details:
- Prov, Inc., 150 W Civic Center Blvd, Suite 601, Sandy, Utah 84070
- Call or text (801) 733-4455, toll free (877) 228-3926
- support@provexam.com
- Open 8:00 am to midnight ET, Monday to Friday
If you are used to boards that publish candidate bulletins themselves, plan to get your information from Prov rather than from Maine.
Your Application Is Public
One thing to know before you file. Asked whether applications are confidential, the Program answers plainly: No. With the exception of Social Security Number, all application information is public. Contact information provided to the board is posted on our website.
If you would rather not have a home address published, use a business address on the application.
Verification Is Free, and Digital Only
Licence verification is available at no charge through the Program's online licensing portal, and the Office is explicit that OPOR does not issue paper licence verifications. If another state asks you for a paper verification of your Maine licence, it will not be coming.
How to Renew Your Maine Barber License
Maine renews annually on 31 October for $20 — one fixed date for every individual licence the Program issues, whatever the discipline and whenever it was granted.
The Late Fee Bites Immediately
Maine gives no grace at all, and the FAQ addresses the obvious question head-on. Asked "Do I have to pay the late fee, I am only a day late?", the Program answers: the late fee is assessed at the time your license expires.
The escalation is steep relative to the fee:
- After the expiration date — a $50 late fee. That is two and a half times the $20 renewal itself.
- More than 90 days after expiry — you must submit a new application with the appropriate fee, plus the $50 late fee and $25 penalty fees.
Ninety days is the point at which renewal stops being available and you start over.
Your Access Code Arrives in the Reminder
Maine emails renewal reminders at least 30 days before expiry, and the reminder is not merely a courtesy: it includes the licensee's access code, which along with the licence number is required for online renewal.
The Program adds that it remains the licensee's responsibility to keep contact information current and to see that the licence is renewed absent the renewal application. Losing the email does not excuse a late renewal, and since all future correspondence is sent by email, an out-of-date address is a real risk.
Renewal Is Not Automatic
The Program warns that online submission of your renewal application should not be construed as automatic renewal — the Department must verify that you have met all the conditions for renewal first.
Keeping a Maine Licence From Out of State
You may keep your Maine licence while living out of state. The Program asks only that you keep your email and physical address up to date so renewal reminders and other correspondence reach you.
No Continuing Education
Maine does not require continuing education hours to renew a Barber Hair Stylist licence.
What a Barber Can Do in Maine
The Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Program was established to protect the public through the regulation of the practice of barbering and cosmetology in the State of Maine. Beyond licensing, it investigates allegations of noncompliance, creates safety and sanitation rules, and enforces those rules through regular inspections of licensed establishments.
House Calls Need No Extra Licence — With One Limit
Maine takes a notably permissive line on working outside a shop, and states it clearly in its FAQ:
Compare that with Florida, which permits home visits only where ill health prevents a client attending a shop, or Maryland, which requires the services to be sponsored by a licensed shop with records kept there. Maine asks only that the person you serve lives in that home.
That residency condition is the real constraint, and it applies with force in institutional settings: in a nursing home or hospital you may serve residents and patients, but not staff or visitors, who do not reside there. The relevant provision is 32 M.R.S. section 14203(2).
Five Regulated Practices
- Barbering
- Limited barbering
- Cosmetology
- Aesthetics
- Nail technology
The Program also licenses and regulates the schools that offer professional practice courses in each of those fields, and separately licenses establishments.
Inspections
Maine enforces its safety and sanitation rules through regular inspections of licensed establishments as well as in response to consumer complaints — inspection is routine rather than complaint-driven only.
A Scam Warning Worth Heeding
The Program publishes a standing Notice of Scam Targeting Licensees. Since all Program correspondence now arrives by email, and since applicant contact details are public on the Program's website, Maine licensees are an easy target for anyone posing as the regulator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a barber license called in Maine? +
A Barber Hair Stylist licence. Maine does not issue anything called simply a "barber" licence, so that is the term to search for on the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation's forms. Maine also regulates a narrower "limited barbering" practice alongside it.
When does a Maine barber license renew? +
Annually on 31 October, the same fixed date for every individual licence the Program issues regardless of discipline or when it was granted. The renewal fee is $20.
What is the late fee for a Maine barber license? +
$50, and it is assessed the moment the licence expires. The Program answers the one-day-late question directly in its FAQ: the late fee is assessed at the time your licence expires. At $50 against a $20 renewal, the penalty is two and a half times the fee itself.
What happens if my Maine barber license is more than 90 days expired? +
Renewal is no longer available. You must submit a new application with the appropriate fee, plus the $50 late fee and $25 in penalty fees. Ninety days is the point at which you start over rather than catch up.
Do I need a special license to cut hair at a client's home in Maine? +
No. A current practice licence lets you go to people's homes and perform services within your scope without an additional licence, including in nursing homes and hospitals. The one limit is that you may only serve individuals who reside within that home, so in an institution you may serve residents and patients but not staff or visitors.
Who administers the Maine barber exam? +
Prov, Inc., of Sandy, Utah. Maine publishes no exam dates or content itself, directing all questions including registration deadlines to Prov on (801) 733-4455 or (877) 228-3926.
Is my Maine barber license application confidential? +
No. With the exception of your Social Security Number, all application information is public, and the Program posts the contact information you provide on its website. If you would rather not publish a home address, use a business address on the application.
Can I keep my Maine barber license if I move away? +
Yes. You may keep a Maine licence while living out of state. Keep your email and physical address current so renewal reminders reach you, since all Program correspondence is now sent by email and the reminder contains the access code you need to renew online.
