Kansas licenses nail technicians as Manicurists through the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. State law defines nail technology concisely as manicuring, pedicuring and sculpturing nails.
- Complete not less than 350 clock hours of instruction and practice in preparation for the profession of manicurist, at a licensed school — or the credit-hour equivalent (see below).
- Pass the licensing examination, administered through the Board's contracted provider at cosmetologykansas.com.
- Apply to the Board and pay the $60 fee.
Then Keep Passing Exams
Kansas is one of a very small number of states where the examination is not a one-time hurdle. Under K.S.A. 65-1904, every biennial renewal requires a successfully completed written renewal examination. See the renewal section — this is the single most distinctive thing about holding a Kansas licence.
One Product Is Banned Outright
Kansas lists possessing methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) among its grounds for discipline. Possession alone is the offence — not use, not sale. If you are moving to Kansas with an existing kit, check it before you arrive.
Training Requirements
Kansas requires a course of instruction and practice of not less than 350 clock hours in preparation for the profession of manicurist. Every licensed Kansas school must offer one.
The Credit-Hour Alternative Has Conditions
A licensed school may elect to base the course on credit hours instead of clock hours, but Kansas attaches unusually specific conditions:
- The conversion formula must be provided by a recognized accrediting body which is approved by the United States Department of Education for accrediting schools of cosmetology.
- The school applying the conversion must itself be accredited through the accrediting body providing the formula.
- The formula is subject to review by the Board.
A school cannot simply invent its own conversion. If your program is credit-based, confirm which accrediting body supplied the formula and that the school is accredited by it.
Core Areas and Part-Time Study
Each course must include the core areas of education as determined and defined by the Board. Kansas also requires by rule that schools provide instruction for part-time students who cannot attend a full weekly schedule — because of part-time employment, enrolment in an accredited secondary school leading to a diploma, or enrolment in an approved cooperative industrial training program.
That part-time obligation is on the school, not on you. If a Kansas school tells you it only runs full-time, the statute says otherwise.
Teaching Manicuring
A Nail Technology (Manicuring) Instructor's License requires that you:
- Be licensed as a cosmetologist or manicurist under the act
- Have practised as a manicurist or cosmetologist for one year before applying
- Pass a manicuring instructor exam administered by the Board or its designee
The instructor licence expires every two years, with continuing education required in the practice of manicuring.
Nail Technician Exam Requirements
Kansas administers its cosmetology examinations through a contracted provider at cosmetologykansas.com, which publishes a nail technician candidate handbook covering content and process.
The Renewal Examination Is the Real Story
Kansas is unusual, and it is worth understanding before you commit to practising there. K.S.A. 65-1904 requires that a licence be renewed upon the filing of a successfully completed written renewal examination prescribed by the board — every two years, for the life of your career.
The statute specifies what the renewal exam covers. For each classification of licensee, the Board prescribes an examination that will test the applicant's understanding of:
- The laws relating to the practice for which the applicant holds a licence
- Health and sanitation matters relating to that practice
- Safety matters relating to that practice
The Board fixes the score for successful completion.
Most states meet this need with continuing education hours. Kansas tests instead — which means there is no course to sit through, but also no way to satisfy the requirement by attendance alone.
The Exam Follows You Into Reinstatement
The written renewal examination is also required to renew late (within six months of expiry) and to reinstate a licence expired beyond six months. There is no route back into Kansas practice that does not go through it.
How to Renew Your Kansas Nail Technician License
Kansas manicurist licences renew on a biennial basis for $50. Expiration dates are established by Board rules and regulations rather than by a single statewide date.
Renewal Requires Three Things
Under K.S.A. 65-1904, renewal requires all of:
- A renewal application filed before the licence expires
- Payment of the nonrefundable renewal fee
- A successfully completed written renewal examination prescribed by the Board
The third item is what sets Kansas apart. Plan for it as a recurring obligation, not a one-off.
No Continuing Education
Kansas does not require continuing education hours for manicurist renewal. The renewal examination substitutes for it.
You Get 30 Days' Notice
The statute requires that at least 30 days prior to expiration, the Board provide the licensee notice of the date of expiration. Keep your address current so that notice reaches you — it is your prompt to sit the renewal exam.
Renewing Late: Two Tiers
Within six months of the expiry date, you may renew by submitting proof satisfactory to the Board of your qualifications to practise, successfully completing the renewal exam, and paying the renewal fee plus a delinquent fee.
Beyond six months, you must apply for reinstatement, filing a successfully completed written renewal examination and paying the delinquent renewal fee plus a nonrefundable renewal penalty fee of $100.
That $100 penalty is twice the ordinary renewal fee, so the six-month line is worth watching.
What a Nail Technician Can Do in Kansas
Kansas defines nail technology as manicuring, pedicuring and sculpturing nails. The inclusion of sculpturing in the statutory definition puts nail enhancements squarely inside the manicurist scope.
Kansas law also draws the boundary from the other direction, defining a cosmetologist as any person other than a manicurist or esthetician who practises cosmetology — while listing manicuring, pedicuring or sculpturing nails among the acts that make up cosmetology. A cosmetologist may do nails; a manicurist may do only nails.
MMA Is Prohibited
This is the most important scope rule for a Kansas nail technician, and it is stated as a ground for discipline rather than buried in a product list: possessing methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) is prohibited.
Note the wording — possessing. The offence does not require that you used it on a client or sold it. Having it in your station is enough. MMA is the cheap acrylic monomer widely restricted for its bond strength and the damage it causes on removal, and Kansas takes a firm line.
If you are relocating with a kit assembled in another state, audit your monomer before you set up.
Other Kansas Credentials
- Cosmetologist — the full scope, including nails
- Cosmetology technician — a distinct Kansas credential
- Esthetician — skin care
- Electrologist — permanent hair removal
All of them share the same renewal architecture, including the written renewal examination and the six-month late-renewal window.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours do you need for a nail tech license in Kansas? +
Not less than 350 clock hours of instruction and practice in preparation for the profession of manicurist. A licensed school may instead base the course on credit hours, but only using a conversion formula from a US Department of Education-approved accrediting body that also accredits the school.
Do Kansas nail technicians have to retake an exam to renew? +
Yes. K.S.A. 65-1904 requires a successfully completed written renewal examination at every biennial renewal, testing your understanding of the laws relating to the practice, health and sanitation matters, and safety matters. Kansas uses this in place of continuing education hours.
How much does a Kansas manicurist license cost? +
$60 to apply and $50 to renew every two years. There are no continuing education course costs, but you do have to sit and pass the written renewal examination each cycle. Reinstating a license expired more than six months adds a $100 renewal penalty fee.
Is MMA banned in Kansas nail salons? +
Yes. Kansas lists possessing methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) among its grounds for discipline. Note the wording: possession alone is the offence, without any need to show you used or sold it. If you are relocating with an existing kit, audit your monomer before setting up.
What happens if my Kansas manicurist license expires? +
Within six months you can renew by submitting proof of your qualifications, passing the written renewal examination, and paying the renewal fee plus a delinquent fee. Beyond six months you need reinstatement, which adds a nonrefundable $100 renewal penalty fee on top.
Do Kansas schools have to offer part-time manicuring courses? +
Yes. Kansas requires by rule that each school provide instruction for part-time students who cannot attend a full weekly schedule because of part-time employment, enrolment in an accredited secondary school leading to a diploma, or enrolment in an approved cooperative industrial training program.
How do I become a manicuring instructor in Kansas? +
You must be licensed as a cosmetologist or manicurist, have practised in that capacity for one year before applying, and pass a manicuring instructor exam administered by the Board or its designee. The instructor license expires every two years and carries its own continuing education requirement.
Will Kansas tell me when my license is about to expire? +
Yes. The statute requires the Board to provide notice of the expiration date at least 30 days before it. Keep your address current, because that notice is your prompt to sit the renewal examination as well as to pay the fee.
