Start in the right place: Kansas barbers are regulated by the Kansas Board of Barbering at kbob.kansas.gov, which is a different agency from the Kansas Board of Cosmetology at kboc.kansas.gov. The cosmetology board's forms, fees and portals do not apply to you.
The Board is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, established by the Kansas Legislature on 27 February 1913 as the State Board of Examination and Inspection for Barbers. It regulates roughly 1,700 licensed barbers.
Kansas Sets a Range, Not a Number
Almost every state publishes a single hour requirement. Kansas publishes two. Asked how many hours of barbering education the state requires, the Board answers: no less than 1,200 and no more than 1,500 hours.
That range is genuinely unusual, and it means the school you choose determines your actual commitment. Two Kansas barber colleges can both be fully approved while running programmes 300 hours apart.
The Steps
- Complete 1,200 to 1,500 hours at a licensed Kansas barber school.
- Apply for examination on the Board's form, in its entirety, with the fee.
- Pass the NIC barber theory written examination first.
- Pass the practical examination and the Kansas Rules and Regulations examination.
What It Costs
The initial barber examination fee is $230, which covers the three-part examination. Retakes are priced separately and by section, which is where Kansas rewards partial success:
- Written re-examination — $150
- Practical re-examination — $100
- Kansas Rules and Regulations re-examination — $50
Because each portion is retaken on its own, failing only the rules section costs $50 rather than another $230.
If You Are Already a Cosmetologist or a Military Barber
Kansas offers a short crossover. A licensed Kansas cosmetologist, or a barber in one of the nation's military services, needs to complete 500 hours of additional education at a licensed Kansas barber school and then apply to sit the next barbering examination.
Training Requirements
Kansas requires no less than 1,200 and no more than 1,500 hours of barbering education at a licensed Kansas barber school.
Why the Range Matters
The floor is what the state will accept; the ceiling is what it will allow a school to require. In practice this means:
- A 1,200-hour programme is the shortest legal route to a Kansas barber licence.
- A 1,500-hour programme is equally valid and matches what many neighbouring states demand.
If you are comparing schools, ask for the programme length in hours before you compare tuition. The 300-hour spread is roughly two to three months of full-time study.
The 500-Hour Crossover
Two groups skip the full course. A licensed Kansas cosmetologist and a barber from one of the nation's military services each need only 500 additional hours at a licensed Kansas barber school before applying for examination.
Kansas treating military barbering experience as equivalent to a cosmetology licence for crossover purposes is notable — many states require military-trained barbers to start over.
Barber Instructors
To teach, you must be a Kansas-licensed barber and sign up for a separate instructor examination. The Board has noted that this examination is under revision, with details to be published on its website once the revised version is complete. Instructor examinations are held at the Hutchinson Community College Barber Program building.
Approved Schools
The Board publishes a list of approved Kansas barber schools, and applications to open a barber school or college are available under its Forms tab.
Barber Exam Requirements
Kansas runs a three-part examination and sets one of the highest passing scores in the country.
80% on Each of Three Portions
The Board is explicit: to pass the Kansas Barber License Examination, a minimum score of 80% must be attained on each of the three portions of the exam. Most states set 70% or 75%. Kansas requires 80%, and it requires it on every component independently — a strong score in one part cannot carry a weak score in another.
The three portions are:
- National Written Barber Styling Theory examination (the NIC exam), taken at a separate site on a separate day
- Practical examination
- Kansas Rules and Regulations examination
The Written Exam Comes First
The Board states it in bold: to be eligible for the barber practical examination, you must have passed the NIC barber theory written examination first. Only after passing the written are you placed on the list for the practical and rules examinations.
How Registration Works
Each examination application allows the Board to pre-register you for the computer-based NIC written exam. You then receive an email from Prov, not from the Board — the sender is donotreply@provexams.com with the subject line "Testing Voucher" — and follow its instructions to finalise registration, choosing your own date, time and location.
Watch for that email. Candidates who expect Board correspondence often miss it.
Bring Two Models
The practical examination requires two models, and one model may be substituted with a mannequin. Practical examinations are held at the Hutchinson Community College Barber Program building, 200 East 3rd Ave, Hutchinson.
The Board also publishes a formal Notice About Clean Tools explaining how tool cleanliness affects the examination — worth reading before you pack your kit.
Who Must Apply for Examination
You must complete an examination application if any of the following apply:
- You graduated from a licensed Kansas barber school or college;
- Your Kansas barber licence has been expired for more than three years;
- You are currently licensed in another state that does not have the same or comparable requirements;
- You were previously examined in Kansas but failed any portion; or
- You received equivalent barbering education in another state and did not take barber examinations in that state.
Examinations must be offered not less than twice in each year under K.S.A. 65-1815, so the calendar is limited — plan around the published dates.
How to Renew Your Kansas Barber License
Kansas barber, instructor, shop and school licences can all be renewed online. The Board notes that a convenience fee is added at checkout.
Two Different Portals
Kansas splits renewal by status, and using the wrong link will not work:
- If your licence is current, use the non-expired renewal form.
- If your licence is expired, use the expired-licence restoration form.
Restoration is not simply a late renewal. Pursuant to K.S.A. 65-1817 and K.A.R. 61-7-2, additional fees must be charged when filing an application for restoration of an expired licence.
The Three-Year Cliff
A licence expired for more than three years cannot be restored by paying fees. The Board lists that situation among those requiring a full examination application — meaning the $230 three-part examination again.
Renewal Fee
The Board does not publish the barber renewal amount on its website, telling licensees instead: if you are uncertain of the amount you should pay, contact the board office at 785-296-2211. We have left the figure unstated here rather than repeat one from an unofficial source.
No Continuing Education
Kansas does not require continuing education hours to renew a barber licence.
If You Own the Shop
A new barber shop application costs $80. Kansas handles the inspection unusually: as the application states, you email pictures of the shop to KBOB@ks.gov for a virtual inspection so the licence can be issued. No in-person visit is needed to get open.
Verifying a Licence
Kansas barbers, shops and instructors are listed on the State of Kansas License Verification Portal at prolicenseverify.ks.gov. Note the caveat the Board publishes: licence information will be updated at the end of every month, so a very recent licence or renewal may not appear yet. For a certification letter verifying a Kansas licence to another state, contact the Board office directly.
What a Barber Can Do in Kansas
Barbering in Kansas is governed by K.S.A. Chapter 65, Article 18 and the Board's regulations at K.A.R. Article 61-7, administered by the Kansas Board of Barbering.
A Board Made of Barbers
The Kansas Board of Barbering consists of five members: four licensed barbers and one representing the public at large. Each serves three-year terms and may be reappointed or removed. A four-to-one working-barber majority is a strong tilt toward practitioner control compared with the mixed boards most states run.
What the Board Licenses
- Barbers
- Barber instructors — requiring a Kansas barber licence plus a separate examination
- Barber shops — $80 for a new shop, licensed after a virtual inspection from emailed photographs
- Barber schools and colleges
Where the Rules Live
The Board publishes its statutes, its regulations, and, unusually, a set of Attorney General opinions on its website. The AG opinions section is worth knowing about if you have a question the statute and regulations do not settle.
Complaints
All complaints to the Board must be signed and notarised, using the formal complaint form from the Forms page. Kansas does not accept informal or anonymous complaints against licensees.
Contacting the Board
The Kansas Board of Barbering is at 700 SW Jackson, Suite 1002, Topeka, KS 66603, on 785-296-2211, at KBOB@ks.gov.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who regulates barbers in Kansas? +
The Kansas Board of Barbering at kbob.kansas.gov, established by the legislature on 27 February 1913. It is a separate agency from the Kansas Board of Cosmetology, so the cosmetology board's forms, fees and portals do not apply to barbers.
How many hours do you need for a barber license in Kansas? +
No less than 1,200 and no more than 1,500 hours. Kansas publishes a range rather than a single figure, which is unusual, and it means two fully approved Kansas barber colleges can run programmes 300 hours apart. Ask for programme length in hours before comparing tuition.
What score do you need to pass the Kansas barber exam? +
80% on each of three portions, graded independently: the NIC national written barber styling theory exam, the practical, and a Kansas Rules and Regulations exam. Most states set 70% or 75%, so Kansas is among the strictest, and a strong score in one portion cannot carry a weak one in another.
How much does the Kansas barber exam cost? +
$230 for the initial three-part examination. Retakes are priced by section: $150 for the written, $100 for the practical, and $50 for the Kansas Rules and Regulations portion. Failing only the rules section therefore costs $50 rather than another $230.
What do I need to bring to the Kansas barber practical exam? +
Two models, one of which may be substituted with a mannequin. The practical is held at the Hutchinson Community College Barber Program building. The Board also publishes a Notice About Clean Tools explaining how tool cleanliness affects the examination, which is worth reading before you pack.
I am a Kansas cosmetologist. How do I become a barber? +
500 hours of additional education at a licensed Kansas barber school, then apply to sit the next barbering examination. The same 500-hour route applies to a barber from one of the nation's military services, which is a more generous treatment of military experience than many states offer.
What happens if my Kansas barber license expires? +
Under three years, you restore it through the expired-licence portal, with additional fees required under K.S.A. 65-1817 and K.A.R. 61-7-2. Expired more than three years, restoration is no longer available and you must file a full examination application, meaning the $230 three-part exam again.
How do I verify a Kansas barber license? +
Through the State of Kansas License Verification Portal at prolicenseverify.ks.gov. Note the Board's caveat that licence information is updated at the end of every month, so a very recent licence or renewal may not show yet. For a certification letter to another state, contact the Board office directly.
