Arizona Esthetician License Requirements

Arizona requires 600 hours of aesthetics training and passing scores on both a written and a practical examination to earn an Arizona esthetician license. The Arizona Barbering and Cosmetology Board issues the license, which the state calls an aesthetician license.

1. Meet the age and education requirements. You must be at least 16 years old with two years of high school education or its equivalent, or at least 18 years old.
2. Complete 600 hours of aesthetics training. Train at a school licensed by the Board, or complete a U.S. Department of Labor-approved or Department of Economic Security-approved apprenticeship in aesthetics.
3. Register with PCS and pass both exams. Arizona uses the national NIC exams administered by Professional Credential Services (PCS). The written and practical exams together cost $177, paid to PCS. Register at pcshq.com.
4. Apply through the licensing portal. PCS sends your results directly to the Board. Create an account in the Licensing Portal, upload a passport-style photo and proof of citizenship, and pay the $60 initial license fee plus a $3 service fee.
5. Receive your license. Processing takes up to 4 weeks. Once approved, you print your license from the portal. It expires on your birthday every two years.

Arizona requires a 600-hour aesthetics course for an Arizona esthetician license, as set out in Arizona Administrative Code R4-10-305(E). Training must be completed at a school licensed by the Arizona Barbering and Cosmetology Board.

When you graduate, your school must issue a Certificate of Graduation listing the school name and license number, your name, the discipline completed, total hours of study, any transfer or crossover hours accepted, your start and end dates, and a dated signature from the school licensee. Graduates must also complete the Arizona School Verification Form and upload it to their PCS account when registering for exams.

Arizona accepts two alternative paths:

• Out-of-state graduates: You qualify if you graduated from a school in another state or country with substantially the same requirements as Arizona-licensed schools.
• Apprenticeship: You can complete a U.S. Department of Labor-approved or Arizona Department of Economic Security-approved apprenticeship program in aesthetics that includes at least 200 hours of infection protection and law review instruction. Registered beauty apprenticeships in Arizona are managed through the Department of Economic Security.

By comparison, Arizona requires 1,500 hours for cosmetology, 1,200 for barbering, 1,000 for hairstyling, and 600 for nail technology — making aesthetics one of the shorter licensing programs in the state.

Arizona uses the national examinations of the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), administered by Professional Credential Services (PCS, also known as Virtual Inc.). You must pass both a written (theory) exam and a practical exam to qualify for an Arizona esthetician license. Both exams are computer-based, and the aesthetics practical is offered in English or Spanish.

Fees and Registration

The written exam costs $100 and the practical exam costs $77 — $177 total, paid directly to PCS. Register at pcshq.com, upload a government-issued photo ID and your completed Arizona School Verification Form, and pay the fee. PCS emails you an Authorization to Test letter with scheduling instructions. The Board does not schedule exams or notify candidates of exam dates.

Retakes

If you fail one part of the exam, you only retake that part. You must pass both sections within one year of your first attempt — after a year, you retake both parts. There is no limit on attempts, but the exam fee must be paid in full each time. If you pass both exams but wait more than a year to apply for your license, you must retake the examinations.

Arizona esthetician licenses expire every two years on your birthday. The renewal fee is $60, plus a $3 service fee. Arizona does not require continuing education for standard license renewal. Note that your initial license may not be valid for a full two years — it expires on your second birthday after issuance.

How to Renew

1. Log in to the Licensing Portal. You can renew starting 60 days before your expiration date.
2. Select 'Renewals' in the left navigation and complete the required questions.
3. Upload a passport-style photo taken against a white background if one is not already on file.
4. Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residence — a passport, Arizona driver's license, or birth certificate with photo ID. This is a one-time requirement.
5. Sign the attestation and pay the $60 renewal fee.

Renewals are not automatic. Board staff review each submission, which can take up to 4 weeks, so start early to avoid a lapse. Once approved, you receive your new license by email — print it and display it at your workstation where clients can see it. A delinquent renewal carries an additional $30 fee.

Arizona defines aesthetics in A.R.S. § 32-501. An aesthetician — the state's term for an esthetician — is licensed to perform skin care services for cosmetic and beautifying purposes, not for the treatment of medical conditions. With an Arizona esthetician license you may perform:

• Skin care services: Massaging, cleansing, stimulating, manipulating, exercising, or beautifying the skin, and applying oils, creams, antiseptics, clays, lotions, or other preparations, either by hand or with mechanical or electrical appliances
• Eyebrow and eyelash services: Arching eyebrows and tinting eyebrows and eyelashes
• Hair removal: Removing superfluous hair by means other than electrolysis or threading — this covers waxing and similar depilatory methods

Electrolysis and threading fall outside the aesthetics license. Aesthetics services must be performed for cosmetic purposes only; diagnosing or treating medical, physical, or mental ailments is outside the scope of practice.

A cosmetology license covers aesthetics as part of its broader scope, but an aesthetician may not perform hair or nail services. You must also work in a Board-licensed establishment, and your printed license must be displayed at your workstation.
